We adore Ben Cartwright for the way he was still so clearly “dad” to his three grown sons.  That comes from years of doing it right!

Pour Me a Cold One

In planning the Big Chili Cook-off, there are a million decisions to be made and a pile of deals to negotiate, always looking for the best price, so that we can end up, when the event is over, with the most money for our firefighters.  There is one decision that is relatively easy, in that the public insists that we stay with the tried and true, and that is in the area of liquid refreshment.  The beer, in other words, is a huge part of the day and Tommyknocker brews, with a side of Coors seems to be the drink of choice.  It is interesting where people put their loyalties, and the kind of beer they drink is no exception.  Attendees and chili cooks, as well as our firefighters want Tommyknocker Brewery from Idaho Springs on tap, partly because it is local and they have been part of the event for years, but equally as important is the quality of the brew, which everyone seems to agree makes Tommyknocker the hands down favorite.  Coors Brewery is the distributor for Tommyknocker, and their efficiency in getting the truck there, fully supplied was a huge help at last year’s event.  We also threw on a tap of Coors Light for good measure and it sold like crazy.  The contribution the beer suppliers make to the event is a large part of the cash that goes into the checks for our Volunteer Fire Departments when the event is over.  Imagine supporting your local Volunteer Firefighters by enjoying a glass of your favorite brew.  America is a wonderful place!

Firefighters Challenge

The fun that can be had at the Big Chili Cook-off in Evergreen is endless, but one of the greatest parts of the day is the Firefighters Challenge.  This is when firefighters from each of the six, Elk Creek, Evergreen, Indian Hills, Platte Canyon, Inter Canyon and North Fork, different fire departments don their gear – coat, pants, boots, gloves, helmet, oxygen, and run an obstacle course with a rescue dummy on their back.  They have to crawl through culverts, climb ladders, chain saw through a barrier, and put out a fire, all in the heat of the day with crowds cheering at the top of their lungs.  The firefighter with the best time wins and receives a trophy to display at his fire house.  Last year Garrison Glenschork from Elk Creek won first place and Clint Sayler, also from Elk Creek came in second.  The fire departments run an obstacle course for the kids prior to their own competition.  There is nothing quite like a three year old in a helmet and fire jacket running between the cones spraying spectators with water to put you in the spirit of the day.  It is part of the Big Chili Cook-off that gets everyone smiling and that is what it’s all about!

Benoit and The Bear

We are asked often about the 2010 Big Chili Cook-off and why it was so successful and the answer is always the same.  There were a lot of things that contributed to the event but none more than our sponsors.  In an event like this it is all about the support of business people, owners who understand that the way of life we all cherish in the mountains only continues with the buy in of businesses and the generosity of individual owners.  The Little Bear Saloon has been here over the years for countless concerns and in 2010 they put their dollars and their hearts behind the Big Chili.  They brought in a great line up of bands that were headlined by Tab Benoit, who had attendees flocking to the event and on their feet until the last note was played.  His energy and talent were assets to the day that people are still talking about, and he is slated to come back again this year.  This year marks the Tenth Anniversary of the Big Chili Cook-Off Music and Arts Festival which coincides with the Tenth Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on our country.  Our plans for the 2011 event are more ambitious than they have ever been, and the support of the Little Bear will go a long way to making it all happen.    Stop in at the Bear sometime for a beer and some music and tell them “thanks”.  Their contribution to our Volunteer Firefighters makes a difference for all of us!
