The Hero

The foe they battle is one of unpredictable strength and speed.  The danger they face is the real, heart pounding, this could be my last day sort.  There is always the chance they will live but be maimed, that they will one day see too much and get lost in the cloud, that they will fight with every ounce of their might and still lose the forest and yet they rise from their beds, or their desks, or their dinner tables and answer the call.  They put on their gear and start up the engines, climb the ladders, and pull it all together because today might be the day they find the child who no one else could reach, or extinguish the flame before it took the next house, or hold the line that stops the flames from devouring the mountain that so many of us call home.  They are firefighters and they volunteer for this duty because today might be the day they save your life.
