volunteer firefighters in Colorado“… Soulful sparkplug Nina Storey might well be called LA NIÑA …can stir up a storm when she belts out her self-penned soul-funk tunes. She’s starting to build an out-of-state audience and her album, “Shades” (on Colorado label Nina Storey Music), shows she has what it takes to become a national Storey.” – The Denver Post

This fantastic musician and songwriter is being noticed by music reviewers everywhere, and if you’ve had the good fortune to hear her, you know why. If you haven’t, you can listen to clips at the Nina Storey Music website here.

The great news is that Nina Storey is the headline act for The Big Chili Cook-Off on September 9, 2012. For the price of a ticket, you get a day filled with fun, including the excitement of tasting the chilies made by our many chili cooks, visiting the beer garden, browsing the booths of our vendors and artists, and listening to several “knock your socks off” bands.

The icing on the cake, so to speak? The day ends with Nina Storey – by far one of the most powerful and expressive voices in the business today. Check The Big Chili website here for information about buying tickets – you, too, can eat great food and enjoy top-notch entertainment, all while supporting our mountain area volunteer fire departments.

Local photographer Flip Dalfonso says, “Photography has always been a passion of mine. Recent retirement has given me the opportunity to travel around and enjoy the many wonders that surround us.” He takes really great outdoor shot, like this photo of the Evergreen Lake House.

Flip does more than photography in his retirement. He also takes ownership of his community by staying involved in those projects close to his heart. This year, Flip has graciously donated photographs for all of our Big Chili ads leading up to the Festival. This is one more thing The Big Chili doesn’t have to pay for. Not only do we get high-quality work, we get it in a way that ultimately puts more money into our firefighter fund. Thanks, Flip!!

… and More Bands

We’re getting so excited for The Big Chili Cook-Off Arts and Entertainment Festival coming to Evergreen September 9, 2012! The primary purpose for this fun and fabulous event is to raise funds for our mountain area volunteer fire departments, but it also serves as a great place for the community to come together, eat scrumptious food, see some beautiful work of local artists, and listen to foot-tappin’ music.

The Big Chili will be featuring Open Space as its opening act, with these other great musicians performing throughout the day:

volunteer firefighters in ColoradoYoung Austin an No Difference ~ Austin Lee Young, a Colorado native, has been described by some as being a “phenom” guitar player.  His youth and energy lend to his own style of music which he calls “Texandrix Blues”. If you’ve never heard Austin play, listen to an audio clip of him playing here at the Young Austin website and be amazed.

The Wendy Woo Band ~ As Colorado’s music scene has exploded over the past few years, one of its mainstays has been Wendy Woo. Her energetic personality, musical skills, and spirited songwriting have made her a media and fan favorite and have taken her to venues across the country. The Wendy Woo Band was the winner of KMGH Channel 7’s 2011 A-List. WWB took first place out of a staggering 271 nominees in the BEST LOCAL BAND category! You can check the band’s website here.

The Bucktones ~   The Bucktones cover a range of styles from Old Rock to Motown to Blues to Country, and originals. They bring a ton of fun to the party, always in good taste! Check out youtube videos or song lists at the Bucktones website here. Mark your calendars now to hear these homegrown Colorado bands live! volunteer firefighters in Colorado

Open Space

The Big Chili Cook-Off this year is September 9th. Although this is a fun arts and entertainment festival, the primary drive of The Big Chili is raising funds for our local volunteer fire departments. We raise funds through sponsorships, ticket sales and donations from the public. It is a great way to bring the community together, have fun and raise money.

One of the best parts of the day are the live bands. This year we have some spectacular talent coming to entertain us and help us raise money for our firefighters. Our headline, main stage band this year is Open Space. Open Space plays “Alt. Country” originals and covers most folks have never heard.

The way they describe themselves is this: Open Space plays Americana with a distortion pedal and shot of whiskey thrown in for good measure. Check them out on their facebook page here, or at their website here. Other favorites who will be performing are Young Austin, Wendy Woo and the Bucktones. It’s sure to be a fantastic day!

There are still booths available for chili cooks. Do you have a delish chili recipe that you’d like to enter in the cook-off? There’s still time. Check The Big Chili website for information about how to enter.

Oakhurst at Cactus Jack’s Saloon

Cactus Jack’s Saloon is a great place to meet friends, relax and listen to great music. And, Cactus Jack’s knows how to give back to the community. They are a faithful sponsor of The Big Chili’s music line-up and we just love them! They host some fabulous bands so be sure and check out their calendar here.volunteer firefighters in Colorado

For instance, Oakhurst, a local band, is coming home to Evergreen this weekend, and will be at Cactus Jack’s March 10 at 8 P.M. When you hear Oakhurst described as “eclectic,” resist the temptation to doubt.  Some artists talk the talk, but when it comes to music that knows no boundaries and no limits and yet remains deeply rooted in the American vernacular, Oakhurst is one tight group that knows how to walk the walk.
