Firefighter Tribute

We try to keep a balance here at The Big Chili as we spend the year planning this fantastic event. We balance all the fun we plan to have at this exciting community event with the reason for its existence – supporting our local volunteer firefighters. A couple of events we have at the festival are specifically designed to bring our minds back to our core purpose. We will have a firefighter tribute that will honor those who serve us. A bagpiper will play, and the Evergreen Firefighter Color Guard will present the colors.

We also have this venue – the Big Chili Blog – to make sure people are made aware of the need to support our volunteer fire departments. We thank our volunteer teams, who make such a huge difference in the community. We thank our local firefighters for their efforts during an already difficult fire season and our national firefighters for coming to Colorado’s assistance. And we make mention of the fact that the stress of this fire season goes way beyond the fires themselves. Many of our firefighters who have already faced a grueling season will have to replace all their gear before next year. This means hundreds and hundreds of dollars coming straight out of the pockets of our volunteers themselves. This is one reason for the existence of The Big Chili – to offset costs of equipment and gear for our firefighters. As you consider your charitable giving for the year, please consider The Big Chili Cook-Off. Your involvement with us puts funding right into the hands of our mountain area fire departments and firefighters.

Why We Do What We Do

volunteer firefighters in ColoradoToday we officially start summer, and The Big Chili Cook-Off is just around the corner. As it draws closer, please get the word out to your friends, families and colleagues about why we exist. It seems that in spite of this blog, and in spite of our webpage which can be found here, and in spite of our facebook page which can be found here, there are people all over Evergreen and the surrounding communities who have no idea what we really do.

We have a lot of fun – that’s true, and I suppose we’re pretty good at advertising all the fun things; but The Big Chili exists for the sole purpose of Raising Money for Our Volunteer Fire Departments. Men and women from  Indian Hills, Elk Creek, , Inter Canyon, Platte Canyon, Evergreen and  North Fork fire districts volunteer as firefighters to keep our mountain homes safe. This means when there is a fire or other emergency, our firefighters come home from a full day at their job, don their gear, and go fight. They are not sitting at the firehouse waiting for the call. They are not paid. To top it off, our firefighters frequently pay for their gear out of their own pockets. So The Big Chili was born, and over the years has raised tens of thousands of dollars for our fire departments. We will continue to raise funds for these selfless men and women, to ensure that our departments are well-funded and adequately equipped, and that the volunteers are fully trained, so when the moment comes we will have the best fire departments in the country.

Please mark your calendar to join us on September 9, 2012. It will be a fantastic day, filled with friendly competition, good food and great music. But most important, it is a tangible way to say Thank You to our volunteer firefighters.

Words Are Not Enough

With the High Park fire still raging, temperatures forecast to hit 100 in Denver today, extremely dry conditions and a potentially scary fire season still looming before us, we want to say:

Thank You Firefighters.

Thank You to those who throw themselves between us and disaster, fighting for our homes and our safety.

Thank You to those in Ft. Collins fighting that monster right now.

Thank You to our local volunteer firefighters who are ready to go at a moment’s notice.

We appreciate you more than words can say.  ~  The Big Chili Cook-Off of Evergreen

Safety First

volunteer firefighters in ColoradoAs summer approaches, the mountain community enters “rescue season.” As the number of people taking advantage of our beautiful outdoors increases, accidents inevitably happen, even occasionally to those who are experienced and well-prepared. In these instances, our search and rescue teams are called upon to do what they do best – find those who are lost and help those who are hurt. If you plan on spending time enjoying our great mountains this season, there are some simple things you can do to increase your own chance of survival if the unexpected happens.

1. Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged and take it with you.

2. Invest in a hand-held GPS for hiking.

3. Carry a basic first-aid kit.

4. Never venture out alone.

5. Always let a third party know where you’re going and when you plan on returning.

Have fun out there enjoying  the great recreation sites available to us in the Rocky Mountains. But please, always be safe.

Funding Our Heroes

volunteer firefighters in ColoradoWhile the Lower North Fork fire was burning, another fire sprang up in Sawmill Gulch near Genesee which threatened homes. Eight fire districts responded and this fire was thankfully put out overnight. One of the responding fire departments was Indian Hills, and unfortunately about $2,000 worth of fire hoses was destroyed during the blaze. Where does the money come from to replace equipment when it’s lost? Sometimes it comes from donors. Sometimes it comes from the firefighters own pockets.

This is the reason we have The Big Chili Cook-Off each year in Evergreen. The Big Chili raises money not only for Indian Hills, but also for the volunteer firefighters of Elk Creek, , Inter Canyon, Platte Canyon, Evergreen and  North Fork fire districts. We hope you plan on attending – you’ll have great fun, eat fantastic food and hear some rockin’ music. But please also consider donating to The Big Chili yourself. We currently have a local business that has stepped up with a matching donation. This means that if you give this month, every dollar you donate will be matched. This instantly doubles the impact of your gift. Check The Big Chili website here for more information on how to donate. Thank you to every single one of you – this event raises the money it does because of people like you!
