Turkey Chili

Posted in 2011, The Big Chili Cook-Off, USA with tags , , , , on 11-01-2011 by thebigchilicookoffevergreen

If you use extra lean turkey, this becomes a low-fat, high-protein meal bursting with flavor.

Turkey Chili

1 – 1.25 pounds ground turkey

1 medium onion – diced

1 can kidney beans, undrained

1 can chili beans, undrained

1 8 ounce can tomato sauce

1 4 ounce can fire roasted green chilis

1 clove garlic, minced

1/2 teaspoon cumin

1 teaspoon chili powder (or more to taste)

1/4 teaspoon oregano

salt and pepper to taste

Saute’ onion for five minutes with a little olive oil. Add turkey to pan and season with salt and pepper. Cook until turkey is no longer pink. Combine turkey and onion with remaining ingredients in a crock pot and cook on low for several hours. (You can also simmer on low on the stovetop). Thin with water if necessary.

A Little Competition

Leads Group 3 The Lunch Bunch has volunteered for years at The Big Chili Cook-Off.

This year, they ran the East beer truck.

WEB/Early Addition Leads Group ran the West beer truck.

Well, with all the chili being tasted that day, beer was pretty popular.

Let’s just say, a little competition ensued between the East truck and the West truck.

The West truck “won” by three kegs, and completely ran out of beer. That translates to money for our volunteer fire departments. Clearly, a little friendly competition is good for everybody!

The Beer Garden

The Big Chili Cook-Off is very excited to have Idaho Springs’ Tommyknocker Brewery sponsoring the Beer Garden at our event. Be sure to stop by for one of their flavorful signature beers.

Tommyknocker is also a chili cook in our restaurant category, vying for the People’s Choice award. In addition to chili, their vendor booth will have some scrumptious goodies available for purchase, like the Chicken Waffle Sandwich (you have to taste it to believe it!), wings, and other munchies.

Remember – the event is September 11th, and you can get more information here.

Thank you Tommyknocker for supporting our local fire departments and firefighters!

Coffee & Whoopie Pie – mmmmmm

Posted in 2011, Around Town, Evergreen Lake House, The Big Chili Cook-Off, Who Gets This Whole Thing Going with tags , , , , , , , on 08-16-2011 by thebigchilicookoffevergreen

A Whoopie Pie is like a sandwich made with two soft cookies with a fluffy white filling.  The original and most commonly made Whoopie Pie is chocolate, but cooks like to experiment, and today a variety of flavors have become popular.

Mainstreet Restaurant will be at The Big Chili Cook-Off selling these authentic New England whoopie pies – don’t miss out! Stop by and get one.

And while you’re at it, grab a coffee from Java Mountain Roasters. They house-roast all their own beans and produce a smooth, satisfying cup of joe.

The Big Chili Cook-Off is just around the corner. Mark your calendars for September 11, 2011.

Seasonally Yours

On the main street in downtown Evergreen is a wonderful little store called Seasonally Yours Evergreen Taffy Co. and Fresh Fudge Too. The shop is colorful, fun, and you’re sure to find just the right gifts for those special people in your lives. If you need a little treat while you’re there, the taffy and fudge are mouthwatering.

We are thrilled that Seasonally Yours is going to be a vendor at The Big Chili Cook-Off on September 11th. They will have cupcake papers filled with fudge available for sale, and Seasonally Yours is generously giving 50¢ from each sale to our mountain area volunteer fire departments.

Thank you Seasonally Yours!
